The unraveling

Two people, repeated dealings, a known final exchange. On that last one there is no future left to protect, so the self-interested move is to take. Both of them know it.

Which makes the second to last exchange the last one carrying a future, so the same reasoning applies there. And to the one before that.

The logic runs all the way back and reaches the first move. This is backward induction, and in the standard model it produces a single answer: take from the very beginning. A known ending is enough to destroy cooperation before it starts.

Nobody in that story is a bad person. The structure produced the behavior, and the people are incidental to it.

Remove the ending and the answer inverts

Take away the known final round and the mathematics reverses. Cooperation becomes sustainable as a stable outcome, and the result carries the name Folk Theorem.

The mechanism is plain enough. When the remaining future is long enough, and the players weigh it heavily enough, what gets lost by taking exceeds what gets gained.

Economists call that weight the shadow of the future. It is the length of what remains multiplied by how much the player cares about it.

Nothing about the people changed between the two stories. The horizon changed, and the horizon was doing the work the whole time.

In finite games with a known ending, real people fail to fully unravel. They keep cooperating well past the round where the theorem says they should have stopped, and they do it reliably enough that it shows up across studies.

People behave as though the horizon is longer than they were told it was. That is worth knowing about the species, and it is worth knowing before deciding how much structure an arrangement needs.

Every arrangement carries a horizon, whether or not anyone said it out loud. A one-off project. A season. A collaboration with no ending named and none assumed.

Behavior follows that horizon more reliably than it follows anyone's intentions, including good ones.
