## New things are combinations

Nothing arrives from nothing. Every technology is a combination of elements, and each of those elements is itself a technology. Open any tool and you find tools. Open those and you find more, all the way down.

This is why calling a thing new describes where it sits in a lineage rather than where it came from. A smartphone is a radio, a camera, a clock, a screen, a battery and a network protocol, arranged. Each of those carries its own ancestry of exactly the same kind.

Arthur calls the result combinatorial evolution. New technologies become building blocks for further new technologies, and the collection bootstraps itself upward from few elements to many, from simple to complex. Technology creates itself out of itself.

The practical reading lands close to home. Your stock of finished work is your supply of building blocks. Compounding is a mechanism here rather than a motivational posture. Ten finished things give you a combinatorial space that one finished thing never will.

## Radical novelty links a need to a phenomenon

Combination explains most of what arrives. It leaves the leaps unexplained, and Arthur is precise about why.

Radar descends from radio. You can vary 1930s radio circuits as radically as you like and you will never get radar. Radar requires a different principle. The leap came from linking a need, seeing aircraft at a distance, to an effect that could fulfill it, radio waves reflecting off metal.

That linking is the origination event. It arrives as a long recursive process rather than a flash. Envision the concept. Find components that make it possible. Discover the problems that raises. Solve those. Discover the subproblems those raise. The work moves back and forth between problems and solutions at different levels before it resolves.

The diagnostic is worth keeping. When something refuses to improve by iteration, the trouble is usually a wrong principle rather than weak execution. Stop tuning. Go find the phenomenon.

## The field responds

Arthur holds the middle of this with a century of worked evidence. What follows extends past where he stops.

Novelty arrives, and it arrives whole. Perception either keeps it as it came or remixes it, and that choice is where purpose enters, because possibility supplies no purpose of its own. It lands as a purposed system, built from elements that were already technologies.

Most needs derive from limitations encountered and problems created by earlier technologies. The car created the need for traffic law, the parking lot and the suburb. Email created the need for the filter, the inbox rule and a shared sense of how fast a reply should come. Combinatorial evolution builds out needs at the same rate it builds out solutions.

This is health rather than failure. An honest roadmap expects each solved thing to generate its own successor, and building anything means accepting the lineage of maintenance it opens.

So the question to ask before you build is the one most plans leave out. What need will this create? You are going to be living inside the answer.

## Watching one arrive

There is a live one running right now, which makes the mechanism unusually easy to watch.

A general-purpose reasoning layer arrived whole. It landed as a purposed system built entirely from prior technologies: statistics, linear algebra, the graphics processor, the web corpus, the transformer. It has already become environment for a great many people. The field is responding at full speed.

The play is where the interesting work sits. People are using it wrong in interesting ways, building small strange things on top of it and telling each other what happened. Story is accumulating. Meaning is being made in public and in real time, which is a rare thing to get to watch.

The needs it created are already visible, and most of them are new. Provenance. A way to tell whether a thing was made by a person. A place to keep your own material so it stays yours. Each of those is the next puzzle, opened by the last solution, exactly on schedule.
